Teal Birch Atelier

Linocut

Linocut at Teal Birch begins with drawing reversal and ends with even pressure across the bed. We teach V-tool and U-tool paths that minimise slip, and we proof on newsprint before committing edition paper.

Single colour first · Then key block overlays

Workshop students carve a postcard-sized block in one evening, print ten proofs, and take home a notes sheet on ink modifiers. Advanced sessions cover reduction cuts and registration pins fabricated in-house from brass stock.

Studio members may store blocks in labelled drawers; humidity in the Ghent canal quarter is monitored to keep linoleum supple.

Tool kits include bench hooks, barens for hand burnishing, and a selection of brayers sized for narrow borders. We demonstrate sharpening with a strop rather than aggressive grinding, preserving tool life for students who purchase their own gouges later.

Evening classes cap at six participants so the instructor can review each carving path. Bring sketches on paper; we mirror them with carbon transfer and discuss which lines deserve open white versus solid ink.
